Virtual network appliances: Benefits and drawbacks
1
There's lots of talk about network virtualization benefits, but are virtual network appliances all they're cracked up to be? Only in some scenarios.
2
Network virtualization benefits can be plentiful, but only in certain scenarios. Learn where virtual network appliances can work -- and where they can't.
3
If virtualization enables servers to be spun up and down on demand for cost efficiency and agility, wouldn't it make sense to implement virtual network components too? After all, virtual servers need to communicate inbound and outbound and still be firewall-protected and load balanced. That would seem to be best addressed by virtual network appliances that can be spun-up on demand, right? Only in some scenarios.
4
Many networking vendors have already begun to minimize development cost by using Intel-based platforms and commodity hardware. Examples of this range from the Cisco ASA firewall to F5 load balancers and Vyatta routers. The obvious next step for some of these vendors has been to offer their products in virtual appliance packaging. F5 took a small step forward with the Local Traffic Manager – Virtual Edition (LTM VE), while Vyatta claims to offer a full range of virtual appliance solutions. VMware was somewhat late to the game, but it also offers virtualized firewalls (vShield Zones and vShield App) and routers/load balancers (vShield Edge)

Virtual network appliances: What's the catch?

The problem is that unlike servers, networking appliances commonly perform I/O-intensive tasks, moving large amounts of data between network interfaces with minimal additional processing, relying heavily on dedicated hardware. All high-speed routing and packet forwarding, as well as encryption (both IPsec and SSL) and load balancing, rely on dedicated silicon. When a networking appliance is repackaged into a virtual machine format, the dedicated hardware is gone, and all these tasks must now be performed by the generalpurpose CPU, sometimes resulting in extreme reduction in performance.

Implementing routers, switches or firewalls in a virtual appliance would just burn the CPU cycles that could be better used elsewhere -- unless, of course, you’ve over-provisioned your servers and have plenty of idle CPU cycles, in which case something has gone seriously wrong with your planning.

To make matters worse, the hypervisor software used in server virtualization solutions also virtualizes the network interfaces. That means that every I/O access path to virtualized hardware from the networking appliance results in a context switch to higher privilege software (the hypervisor), which uses numerous CPU cycles to decode what needs to be done and emulate the desired action. Also, data passed between virtual machines must be copied between their address spaces, adding further latency to the process.

There is some help in that the VMware hypervisor has the DVFilter API, which allows a loadable kernel module to inspect and modify network traffic either within the hypervisor (vNetwork Data Path Agent) or in combination with a virtual machine (vNetwork Control Path Agent). The loadable kernel module significantly reduces the VM context switching overhead.

Where virtual network appliances can work?

There are some use cases in which virtual network appliances make perfect sense. For instance, you could virtualize an appliance that performs lots of CPU-intensive processing with no reliance on dedicated hardware. Web application firewalls (WAFs) and complex load balancers are perfect examples (no wonder they’re commonly implemented as loadable modules in Apache Web servers or as Squid reverse proxy servers).

Also, if you’re planning to roll out multi-tenant cloud, the flexibility gained by treating networking appliances as click-to-deploy Lego bricks might more than justify the subpar performance. This is especially so if you charge your users by their actual VM/CPU usage, in which case you don’t really care how much CPU they’re using.

Virtualized networking also makes sense when firewall and routing functions are implemented as part of the virtual switch in each hypervisor. This could result in optimal traffic flow between virtual machines (regardless of whether they belong to the same IP subnet or not) and solve the problem of traffic trombones. Unfortunately, it seems that Cisco is still the only vendor that extends the VMware hypervisor switch using the Virtual Ethernet Module (VEM) functionality. While numerous security solutions already deploy the VMsafe APIs, the networking appliances I’ve seen so far (including the vShield Edge from VMware) rely on virtual machines to forward traffic between virtual (or physical) LANs.

Obviously the networking vendors have a very long way to go before reaching the true potential of virtualized networking.

 TEXTO 1:

Can science fiction still predict the future?

In the novel 2001: A Space Odyssey, Arthur C. Clarke shows us Dr. Heywood Floyd reading his “newspad”, where he can consult any newspaper he wishes. How many future computer engineers read this science fiction classic – or saw the motion picture – and thought: “I want one of those!”? As science fiction fans know, finding examples in earlier fiction that resemble new technology brings a glow of satisfaction at seeing our world foretold. But how has rapid technological development affected such forecasts?

Wondering how scientific advances would shape the future is not a new preoccupation – indeed, rocket propulsion may first have been suggested in a 1657 work by Cyrano de Bergerac, who shoots his hero to the moon with firecrackers. But few have been so enthralled by imaginings of the future as John Claudius Loudon. In the March 1828 issue of Gardener’s Magazine, Loudon ran a review of Jane Webb’s The Mummy!, a novel about an Egyptian mummy resurrected in the 22nd century. So impressed was Loudon by Webb’s steam-powered agricultural machines, air beds, milking machines and smokeless fuel that he arranged an introduction to the young writer. They were later married.

Enthusiasm about such speculation hasn’t been universal. For example, Jules Verne’s 1863 novel Paris in the Twentieth Century depicted a 1960s world of skyscrapers, fax machines and even a proto-internet. It was turned down by his publisher as “unbelievable”, and only finally published in 1994.

In the 20th century, emerging technologies made such ideas more believable. In 1926, the first issue of the science fiction magazine Amazing Stories enthused: “Extravagant Fiction Today… Cold Fact Tomorrow”. In 1928, the British newspaper Daily Mail published an issue forecasting the year 2000 – with giant flat-screen tvs in public places -, which caused little surprise. As time goes by, though, it becomes increasingly difficult to distinguish between science fiction and reality.

Of course, some have argued that projecting a plausible future is more science than art. Robert Heinlein was one of many authors credited with “inventing” the cellphone, which appears in his 1948 novel Space Cadet. Those with an ache to foretell the future may want to take a page out of his book: he maintained that his “prophecies” – which included atomic weapons and remote controls – were not born solely of his imagination, but rooted in his science education and knowledge of current research.

RESPOSTAS:
- No inicio do 2º parágrafo: "Wondering how scientific advances would shape the future is not a new preoccupation".

- coerência interna;
2 - relação com a realidade.

O texto informa que o editor de Julio Verne se recusou a publicar Paris in the Twentieth Century (l.16) porque a obra seria “inacreditável”.

Aponte qual dos aspectos mencionados acima explica a atitude do editor, justificando sua resposta.

RESPOSTA:
- No 3º parágrafo:
"[...] Enthusiasm about such speculation hasn’t been universal. For example, Jules Verne’s 1863 novel Paris in the Twentieth Century depicted a 1960s world of skyscrapers, fax machines and even a proto-internet. It was turned down by his publisher as “unbelievable”, and only finally published in 1994.(O entusiasmo com essa especulação não é universal.

RESPOSTA:
- Sentenças no texto:
1) In 1926, the first issue of the science fiction magazine Amazing Stories enthused: “Extravagant Fiction Today… Cold Fact Tomorrow”.
2) In 1928, the British newspaper Daily Mail published an issue forecasting the year 2000 – with giant flat-screen tvs in public places -, which caused little surprise.
- Possíveis respostas do candidato:

RESPOSTAS:

- No início do último parágrafo:
"[...] Of course, some have argued that projecting a plausible future is more science than art.(Claro, alguns argumentaram que projetar um futuro plausível é mais ciência do que arte.)

"[...] Those with an ache to foretell the future may want to take a page out of his book: he maintained that his “prophecies” – which included atomic weapons and remote controls – were not born solely of his imagination, but rooted in his science education and knowledge of current research."

• dois verbos distintos que têm sentido equivalente a predict;

RESPOSTAS:

- The verb PREDICT means to say that an event or action will happen in the future.

 TEXTO 2:
The fortune teller

“Your luck’s going to change”, she said, locking the door to bar my way. “I’m closing now. Come back tomorrow. I’ll be here after ten”.

I needed it to change. It had been a grim couple of months: I had lost my job and failed to lure a woman into my life. “Can’t you see me now?”, I asked, wanting to bring on the metamorphosis as soon as possible.

“I’ve finished for today. I have things to do”. She took my hand and squeezed gently as we stood on the pavement outside the rickety cabin that served as her office. “Another day won’t hurt. Come back tomorrow”, she smiled. “Your luck’s going to change, and how”.

I hadn’t imagined that a fortune teller could be pretty, but thinking about it, I suppose they can be anything that anyone else could be: young, old, fat, thin, rich or dirt poor. But this one was pretty and, more than that, I thought I saw something in her eyes, a hint of a come on, maybe. But it had been so long since I’d seen that look that I wasn’t sure I recognised it.

“Be here tomorrow”, she said again. “Bye”, I called, cheerfully confused.

It seemed like fate. The first time I ever pick up one of those trashy magazines and there’s her advert, extolling the virtues of knowing what’s around the corner. Then, when I get to her place, I find a good looking woman who seems interested in me. Tomorrow can’t come quick enough.

I couldn’t sleep for thinking about her. During the night, she changed from mere pretty to beautiful. Her smile had broadened and the hand-squeeze had tightened.

I’d wanted to be on her doorstep before her arrival, but I’d made myself late by worrying about how I looked and smelled. In due course, I was at the cabin and after straightening my tie, prepared to knock on the door. It was then that I noticed the hastily written note that was pinned just below the knocker. It read: “Closed today due to unforeseen circumstances”.

If “genetic engineering” has, in the public’s view, become synonymous with the indiscriminate mixing of genes, and if the softer label “genetically modified” hasn’t been able to shake off a perception of sinister overtones, these terms might as well be dropped − or left attached only to experiments in Dr. Frankenstein’s laboratory.
Ideally, a new agricultural term would leave out the word “genetic” altogether: it seems to frighten the public.
Assuming it described science’s benign genetic activities accurately, the term “productivity breeding” is not a trivial call for a euphemism; besides, it would probably encounter less public opposition.
So, let’s have new terms for selective cross breeding by scientists who simply speed up the same process that is carried out in nature.
Clean coal*
Carvão limpo*
If this new term was intended to be clear, it hasn’t worked.
In “Politics and the English Language” (1946), George Orwell wrote that because so much political speech involves defending the indefensible, it has to consist largely of euphemism.
He insisted that, in politics, these euphemisms are “swindles” and “perversions” left deliberately vague in order to mislead.
Deliberate or not, “clean coal” is one of these.
Aside from being a contradiction in terms, the name is misleading, creating the impression of the existence of a new type of coal. In fact, it is ordinary coal which has been treated to “eliminate” most of its destructive by-products, which are then buried. The whole process produces emissions.
This, though, isn’t clear when it is simply labelled “clean coal”.
The term just doesn’t seem sincere. It’s a red rag to any green. It’s not asking too much to expect the term describing these procedures to be more accurate. A clearer term would be less provocative.
So, what’s in a name? A lot. There’s the possibility of confusion, prejudice, perversions and swindles. For the sake of fair debate, let’s mean what we say and say what we mean.
Então, o que há em um nome? Bastante.

By any other name
Would smell as sweet
